How We Chose the Best SUVs of 2025

We looked at each SUV in the context of what it is designed to do.

The AutoFinder Score considers value, practicality, independent safety testing, efficiency, capability, comfort, technology, and current marketplace availability. We use objective information where comparable data is available, including IIHS testing, manufacturer specifications, and current AutoFinder inventory.

Marketplace data comes from an AutoFinder analysis of 61,607 active 2025 SUV listings pulled October 5, 2026. That gives us a current look at advertised prices and availability for shoppers considering a 2025 model today.

Some factors, particularly comfort and overall usability, require editorial evaluation. Reliability is not included in the score because comparable long-term reliability information is not yet available for every 2025 model.

Scores are also considered in context. A compact SUV is not penalized because it cannot tow as much as a full-size SUV, and a three-row family SUV is not expected to match a hybrid crossover for fuel economy.

Best Overall SUV: 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid gets our overall pick because it does a lot well without asking buyers to accept a major compromise in return.

Its hybrid system produces 219 combined horsepower, and electronic All Wheel Drive comes standard. Fuel economy reaches an EPA-estimated 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway on several trims. That is an appealing combination for someone who wants SUV versatility without paying for it every time they stop for gas.

The RAV4 is also easy to live with. There is useful cargo room, the cabin is straightforward, and the compact footprint keeps it manageable for commuting and parking.

Availability is another advantage for shoppers looking for a 2025 model today. AutoFinder's analysis found nearly 2,000 active 2025 RAV4 Hybrid listings spread across all 50 states.

It is not perfect. IIHS gives the 2025 RAV4 a Marginal rating in its updated moderate overlap front test and an Acceptable rating in the updated side test. Buyers who put crash test performance above everything else have stronger choices on this list.

For most shoppers, though, the RAV4 Hybrid's mix of efficiency, space, standard All Wheel Drive and availability makes it the most complete 2025 SUV in this group.

Best Compact SUV: 2025 Toyota RAV4

Buyers who do not need a hybrid should look at the regular 2025 Toyota RAV4.

It has the practical qualities that have made the RAV4 such a popular compact SUV: useful cargo space, available All Wheel Drive, good fuel economy, and enough ground clearance for more than paved suburban roads.

Current availability is unusually strong. We found 5,734 active 2025 RAV4 listings on AutoFinder, more than any other SUV in our candidate group. The median advertised price was $32,179.

That does not make the RAV4 the best compact SUV by itself, but it matters when you are actually shopping. More inventory can mean more choices in trim, drivetrain, mileage, location and price.

Safety is where the RAV4 gives up some ground to competitors such as the Mazda CX 5. IIHS rates the RAV4 Good in the small overlap front test, Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front test, and Acceptable in the updated side test.

The RAV4 still earns this category because it brings together practicality, efficiency, and a wide selection of vehicles currently available to shoppers.

Best SUV for Families: 2025 Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is one of the easiest recommendations on this list for families that actually need three rows.

There is enough passenger space to make the third row useful rather than an occasional backup seat, and the cabin gives families the storage, charging options, and technology that become important when several people are sharing one vehicle.

Safety helped separate the Telluride from some of its closest competitors. The 2025 Telluride earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. It received Good ratings in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. IIHS also gave its standard pedestrian front crash prevention system a Good rating.

The current market is favorable compared with what buyers faced when these vehicles were new. AutoFinder found just over 2,000 active 2025 Telluride listings, with a median advertised price of about $34,200.

Fuel economy is not a reason to choose the Telluride, and shoppers who rarely use the third row may be happier with a smaller SUV. But when the assignment is carrying people comfortably and giving a family room to grow, the Telluride makes a strong case.

Best SUV for the Money: 2025 Mazda CX-5

AutoFinder Score: 87/100

The Mazda CX-5 stands out because its current price does not fully reflect how much SUV you are getting.

Our inventory analysis found more than 4,700 active 2025 CX-5 listings. The median advertised price was $27,495, putting it well below several other compact SUVs we evaluated. Every 2025 CX-5 also comes with All Wheel Drive.

The CX-5 feels a little different from many value-focused SUVs. Its cabin has a more polished look, and its driving manners lean more toward controlled and responsive than soft and anonymous.

Crashworthiness is another strength. IIHS gives the 2025 CX-5 Good ratings in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side tests.

There is an important safety caveat. Its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system received a Poor rating from IIHS. That is worth knowing even though the CX-5 performed well in the crashworthiness tests themselves.

For shoppers trying to get a well-equipped SUV without pushing into the mid-$30,000 range, the current combination of price, standard All Wheel Drive, and crash protection makes the CX-5 difficult to overlook.

Best Affordable SUV: 2025 Chevrolet Trax

AutoFinder Score: 76/100

The Chevrolet Trax proves that a category winner does not need the highest overall score.

This is the SUV we would look at first when price is the main constraint. Among the major models in our AutoFinder analysis, the Trax had the lowest median advertised price at $21,720. There were more than 4,000 active listings, so shoppers also have a sizable pool to choose from.

The Trax makes smart use of its footprint, with enough passenger and cargo room to work as an everyday vehicle rather than feeling like a city car dressed up as an SUV.

There are compromises behind the price. The Trax is front wheel drive only, so shoppers who specifically need All Wheel Drive should look elsewhere. Its IIHS results are also mixed. It earned a Good small overlap front rating, but a Poor rating in the updated moderate overlap front test.

That keeps its overall score below several other SUVs here.

Still, not everyone shopping for a 2025 SUV has $30,000 or $40,000 to spend. For someone focused on getting a newer, practical SUV while keeping the purchase price down, the Trax deserves a place on the shortlist.

Best Hybrid SUV: 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

The RAV4 Hybrid wins our overall award, but the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid deserves its own recognition for shoppers specifically comparing hybrids.

The 2025 Tucson Hybrid produces 231 combined horsepower and comes with HTRAC All Wheel Drive. The Blue trim is EPA-estimated at 38 mpg city, highway, and combined.

It is also surprisingly roomy for an efficient compact SUV. Hyundai lists 38.7 cubic feet of SAE cargo volume behind the rear seats and 74.5 cubic feet with them folded.

Safety is where the Tucson Hybrid really strengthens its case. The 2025 Tucson earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, with Good results in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side tests.

AutoFinder found 439 active 2025 Tucson Hybrid listings, with a median advertised price of about $33,376. That is considerably less inventory than the RAV4 Hybrid, so shoppers may have fewer nearby choices.

Best SUV for Winter Driving: 2025 Subaru Outback

AutoFinder Score: 88/100

The Subaru Outback remains one of the more convincing choices for drivers who regularly deal with snow, slush and poorly maintained winter roads.

Symmetrical All Wheel Drive and X MODE are standard. Ground clearance reaches 8.7 inches on most versions and 9.5 inches on the Wilderness. That gives the Outback an advantage over lower-riding crossovers when snow starts piling up.

It is also more efficient than its rugged image might suggest. Some versions are rated at up to 32 mpg highway.

Our AutoFinder inventory analysis found 2,282 active 2025 Outbacks, and every one in the analyzed set was equipped with All Wheel Drive. The median advertised price was about $31,919.

The Outback does not get a perfect safety story. IIHS gives it a Marginal rating in the updated moderate overlap front test, although it earned Good results in the small overlap front and updated side tests.

For shoppers who prioritize winter traction and ground clearance but do not want the size or fuel use of a traditional off road SUV, the Outback still makes a lot of sense.

Best Off Road SUV: 2025 Toyota 4Runner

AutoFinder Score: 80/100

The redesigned 2025 Toyota 4Runner is built for a different job than most SUVs on this list.

Toyota offers a standard turbocharged engine producing 278 horsepower, while the available iFORCE MAX hybrid powertrain raises output to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing reaches 6,000 pounds.

More important for this category, buyers can choose versions designed around actual trail use. Equipment available across the off-road-focused lineup includes Multi Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and an electronic locking rear differential.

That capability comes with trade-offs. The 4Runner costs more than a typical crossover and will not match a RAV4 Hybrid or Tucson Hybrid for fuel economy. IIHS also gives the 2025 4Runner a Marginal rating in its updated moderate overlap front test.

None of those drawbacks changes what the 4Runner does best. If your SUV needs to handle trails, rough terrain and trips that go well beyond the pavement, it offers hardware that everyday crossovers simply do not.

Best Full Size SUV: 2025 Ford Expedition

When passenger space and towing move to the top of the list, the Ford Expedition becomes much easier to justify.

Properly equipped 2025 Expedition models can tow up to 9,600 pounds. The regular Expedition offers as much as 108.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the first row, while the longer Expedition MAX stretches that to 123.1 cubic feet.

That is the kind of space that matters when a large family, luggage and towing equipment all need to fit into the same vehicle.

Current pricing also helped the Expedition edge out some of its full size rivals. AutoFinder found a median advertised price of about $59,017 for active 2025 Expeditions. That was lower than the Tahoe at roughly $62,177 and well below the Yukon at about $70,097 in the same analysis.

Safety is not the Expedition's strongest argument. IIHS gives it Marginal ratings in both the small overlap front and updated moderate overlap front tests, although it earns a Good result in the updated side test.

If you do not need its towing ability or interior volume, buying something this large is difficult to justify. If you do, the Expedition delivers a combination of space, capability and current market value that earns it our full size pick.

Best Luxury SUV: 2025 BMW X5

AutoFinder Score: 85/100

Luxury SUVs can become an exercise in paying more for nicer materials without getting a substantially better vehicle. The BMW X5 makes a stronger case for the extra money.

The cabin feels appropriately upscale, but comfort is only part of the appeal. The X5 also gives buyers strong performance choices, useful cargo space, and technology that does not require sacrificing everyday practicality.

Safety is a major strength. The 2025 BMW X5 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, including Good ratings in the major crashworthiness tests.

The obvious issue is price. The current AutoFinder median advertised price for a 2025 X5 is around $57,000, putting it in a completely different budget conversation from a CX 5, RAV4 or Tucson.

For shoppers already planning to spend luxury SUV money, though, the X5 delivers enough substance behind the badge to justify its place here.

Which 2025 SUV Should You Buy?

Start with what you actually need the SUV to do.

If you want one vehicle that handles commuting, road trips, and family duty while keeping fuel costs reasonable, the RAV4 Hybrid is our strongest all-around choice.

Need three rows? Start with the Telluride. Want to keep the purchase price down? Look at the Trax or CX-5. Regularly drive through snow? The Outback makes a stronger case. If towing or trail capability matters more than fuel economy, the Expedition and 4Runner solve very different versions of that problem.

The score helps compare the field, but the highest number is not automatically the right SUV for every shopper. Your budget, passenger needs, local weather, and how you use the vehicle matter more than a few points on a ranking.
